Whether you are picnicking, spending time outside at a patio table or in your home you may come across bugs from time to time. Out of all of the bugs you may encounter the ants can be especially pesky because they often send a scout ant out in search of food to bring back to their home.  Ants put a lot of effort into taking over and often will invade in large numbers.

Keep Ants Out of Your Home

There are several ways to keep these notorious insects out of your home. The first thing you should do is safe guard any place in your household where the ants will want to explore. Top priority places for ants include the kitchen, bathroom, cabinets and the pantry. Anywhere you may store food should always be treated to deter ants and other pests.

Simple and effective ways to eliminate these pests will most likely be found already taking up residence in your kitchen cabinets. Common home ingredients such as chalk, vinegar, dish soap, baking soda and powdered sugar will all help expel ants from your residence.

Keep Ants Away During Picnic

When on a picnic you can easily carry a stick of chalk with your other supplies and draw a line around your picnic table to create an all-natural barrier between your meal and the ants impending invasion. If the ants broach your home and begin making their presence known on your kitchen counters you can treat them in a variety of ways.

How to use peppermint essential oil for ants

Now that you have spotted ants inside your home you need to figure out which method you would like to utilize to effectively rid yourself of their presence. Some bug sprays act as a deterrent while others will kill ants on the spot. You can visit your favorite retailer and purchase chemicals that will remove the ants but these chemicals are toxic which means they are not safe to expose your family and pets to.

Ant killing chemicals often include sprays, gels or bait traps. The bait traps will encourage the ants to feast on an internal poison and bring remnants of it back to their nest. Seeking out a natural alternative is the best way to rid your home of the ant problem and some all-natural solutions work in the same way as the chemical infused sprays, powders and bait traps.

Natural Solutions

There are many natural solutions that will minimize the impact the ants will have on your life that are safe to have around your family. The simplest mixture that you can create is comprised of even parts baking soda and powdered sugar. You will want to mix these two common ingredients well and then place it in the path of a line of approaching ants.

If you do not wish to place this directly on the floor or ground you can use a piece of paper or a small flat canning jar lid. The ants will take the mixture back to their nest and eat it. Baking soda will naturally disrupt the chemical make-up of the ants’ body and when consumed it will cause death.

When the ants bring it back to the nest the others will feast on it and also die. If you do not have baking soda and powdered sugar handy you can still deter the ants by drawing a literal line between them and your home. Ants will not cross a line of chalk because the chalk naturally disrupts their pheromone trails.

Do Ants hate Peppermint

Pheromone trails are released as ants are marching; these trails create a path for ants further down the marching line to follow. This trail will guide the ants to their target destination and back to their nest. Without a scent trail the ants will roam around aimlessly. Vinegar is another all natural remedy that you most likely already have in your kitchen pantry. Ants absolutely hate the smell of vinegar and it works the same way that chalk does by disrupting their pheromone trails.

Vinegar Can Also help

You can spray vinegar around your window sills and door frames to prevent ants from entering your home.  If you are outside you can use your vinegar spray around your table or picnic area to keep the ants away. While you are utilizing vinegar you can make a solution of vinegar and liquid dish soap in a spray bottle. When you are spraying the ants with this mixture you are killing them and eliminating any scent trails they may have marked.

The soap will coat the ants’ body and suffocate it while the vinegar will remove any scent trails and deter other ants from encroaching into your space. Essential oils have many benefits that are natural alternatives to many chemical and harmful products.

Some of the best ways to eliminate ants is by creating a mix with Young Living essential oils. A simple mixture of a few drops of peppermint oil combined with water in a small spray bottle is great to keep on hand to deter ants. Ants despise the scent of peppermint essential oil because it is strong and interferes with their communication abilities. You can wipe window sills and door frames with a cotton ball that is saturated with peppermint oil to create a barrier that ants and other insects will not want to cross. Spiders and other insects also dislike the smell of peppermint and will not enter a home that has a peppermint solution around entrance points.

Other essential oils that help keep pesky bugs at bay include:

  • tea tree oil
  • clove essential oil
  • vetiver essential oil
  • orange essential oil.

Keeping the bugs away is important to take back your home and to enjoy your time outdoors. In the event that you may find yourself suffering from an obnoxious bug bite you can also use a mixture with peppermint oil to limit the itch the bite may be inflicting. You can create a simple mixture consisting of a carrier oil with a few drops of peppermint oil, lavender and tea tree oil. These are powerhouse essential oils that will help provide nearly instantaneous itch relief. These are all safer alternatives to harmful chemicals and are often more effective than they are as well.
