Enhancing the smell of your home can easily be achieved in a number of ways. Sometimes people turn to chemical filled air fresheners or candles. These are both effective when it comes to refreshing the air and creating a desirable scent but there is a more natural way to achieve a great smelling space.

Scent is so important at the yoga studio and at home. But so many candles can be filled with potentially harmful chemicals that release into the air as the candle gives off smoke. (Even soy-based ones we think are super-healthy are often loaded with chemicals!) This is especially true of paraffin-based candles, which are the most popular and least expensive.

According to CNN, some of the chemicals candles expose us to include known carcinogens like benzene and toluene, other heavy metals, and paraffins. Given these facts, candles made of beeswax or soy are the best and healthiest options—if you’re going to use candles.

Using an Essential Oil Diffuser

Utilizing an essential oils diffuser is the best way to spread fragrance around your house that is healthy to inhale. You can also buy small diffusers that plug into your vehicle to keep your air refreshed while you are commuting. Diffused essential oils offer many benefits other than just refreshing the air. These therapeutic oils will help enhance moods and bring aromatherapy into your home.

If you are new to using aromatherapy essential oil diffusers you should note that not all diffusers are created equal. Smaller diffusers often work in smaller spaces and larger ones will fare well in larger rooms such as family rooms or even open concept spaces and basements. Once you have set up the proper diffuser in the appropriate sized space you can then go through your Young Living essential oils and decide upon what type of mood you want to promote in your space.

Soothing scents such as:

  • lavender essential oil
  • patchouli essential oil
  • sandalwood essential oil
  • rosemary essential oil
  • cinnamon essential oil

Diffuse for Calm Environment:

These are ideal to diffuse in a space where you want to relax and destress.  If you are diffusing oils to relieve tension and establish a fresh and crisp scent in your home you will want to diffuse:

  • vetiver essential oil
  • eucalyptus essential oil
  • peppermint essential oil
  • tea tree essential oil
  • clary sage essential oil

Diffuse for refresh citrus Smell:

When trying to uplift the environment and achieve a refreshed and invigorating scent you should diffuse pure organic citrus oils such as:

  • lemon oil
  • lemongrass oil
  • grapefruit oil
  • orange oil
  • lime oil

These can have a sweet and strong scent that will energize the atmosphere.

Essential oils often double as mood enhancers when diffused in a space but they can also mimic some of your favorite scents. If you are unable to get some fresh cut flowers from a store you can diffuse rose essential oil or jasmine essential oil to bring a natural floral scent into the home.

Essential Oil Spray that smells good

You can also create a home spray that consists of essential oil, a grain alcohol and water. This spray refreshes the air when it is spritzed liberally. Many Young Living essential oil blends are also powerful and provide a perfectly blended mix of oils that work well with one another. These blends can come in floral, earthy, revitalizing or calming scents.

With so many essential oils to choose from you can spend quite a bit of time mixing up the aromas of your home. You can establish diffusers in nearly every room of your house and have customized scent blends for each person who resides in your household. Some essential oils also work well in certain spaces of the room.

Oils that Smell good in the Kitchen

Kitchens often smell clean and welcoming when following oils are diffused:

  • lemon Essential oil
  • grapefruit essential oil
  • rosemary essential oil
  • tea tree essential oil

Lemon and grapefruit are commonly found in a wide variety of dish soaps and commercial cleaning sprays because of their refreshing scent.  Cinnamon also replicates the smell of fresh baked pastries and diffuses well in bathrooms.

Smell Good Bathroom with Tea Tree:

Bathrooms often smell great when tea tree oil is used in a smaller diffuser. Tea tree oil offers antimicrobial properties that also are found in many health and beauty products. The warm and inviting scents of patchouli, sandalwood, frankincense, and vetiver work well in large gathering rooms because they help produce a comfortable environment. Lavender is commonly used in bedrooms to help spread a calming scent across the room to enhance the quality of sleep

Essential Oil Blends/Mixture that Smell Good:

Once you have become comfortable with your favorite essential oils you can begin making your own customized blends and experimenting with how they complement each other while diffusing. Tea tree oil alone can sometimes have a strong scent but when blended with a citrus scent or peppermint you may find it refreshing and inviting.

While blending essential oils is an art and a science, there are really no wrong ways to do it. The best recommendation we can make for when you start mixing essential oils is to take notes of what you combined and how you liked the outcome. The benefit of blending essential oils, from an aromatherapy perspective, is that you can create a more diverse chemical profile, which can in turn provide a more comprehensive base to address whatever issue you may be trying to solve.

Cinnamon Essential Oil:

The same can be said about cinnamon. Cinnamon is derived from the cinnamomum verum tree and has a very strong scent. It is common to find cinnamon as a partial ingredient in commercial candles. It often pairs with orange, vanilla or apple in candle and wax tart varieties. Cinnamon essential oil can also be blended with vanilla or orange to soften the pungent odor of it and create a warm and comfortable scent in your home.

When you are creating new essential oils blends for various rooms of your home you may find that keeping a log of those blends will help throughout your experimental process. You can write down which ratios of each oil worked best and created your favorite results.

Diffusing Essentials Oils in your Home

Diffusing oils in your home for a great smelling environment is not the only way to take advantage of the fabulous scents that these oils offer. You can make blends of your favorite essential oils in glass roller ball containers and apply them as you would a perfume. These DIY oil blends should always be diluted with carrier oil. Essential oils should not be applied directly to the skin because they are highly concentrated.

In addition to diffusing essential oils aromatically, they can be used topically. Essential oils are highly concentrated, so always be sure to dilute first, using a carrier oil, and follow recommended usage and dilution guidelines.

Popular carrier oils are:

  • coconut oil
  • grapeseed oil
  • sweet almond oil

You can wear your favorite calming scent whenever you feel the need to be energized or calmed down. If you are in a rush and do not have time to apply essential oils you can add a few drops of essential oil to a cotton ball and place the cotton ball in a plastic bag or air tight container. Carry this with you throughout the day and open the bag or container for a quick aromatherapy treatment session.

Simply inhale the fragrance enhanced air and relax. You can also leave a cotton ball containing a few drops of your favorite essential oil in your automobile. The air will always be refreshing when you enter your vehicle and you will be breathing in all natural scents rather than commercially produced automobile air fresheners that can contain harmful ingredients.

Other Great Popular Smelling Essential Oils:

Lavender Oil

One of the most popular essential oils is lavender, and it’s easy to see why. If you’ve ever passed a lavender bush, you’ll know that it smells fresh and floral. Many also describe it as calming or comforting.

Lavender is commonly referred to in aromatherapy as ‘the mother of essential oils’, due in large part to its versatility and wide range of uses. Lavender promotes deep relaxation, encourages rest and can also be used to treat minor skin inflammations or skin dehydration.

Like its fellow essential oil orange, lavender also has adaptogenic properties that allow people to experience it either as calming or uplifting. The gentleness of lavender is evident in its sweet floral aroma, and in its ability to ease worries of the mind.

Lemon Oil

There is something so clean and refreshing about the smell of lemons, which is why so many people love lemon essential oil. And scientists agree—one study found that inhaling it was more effective at boosting mood than lavender aromatherapy.

Encompassing oils like Wild Orange, Lime, Lemon, and Bergamot, citrus aromas are usually easy to identify. They smell fruity and clean, with a bit of a sour bite. Citrus notes are most often top notes

Lemon oil is commonly used in the kinds of commercially available products you encounter every day. If you walk down the aisles of any grocery store, you’ll find everything from household cleaner to hand soap to flavored sparkling water with the essence of lemon. As is the case with many citrus oils, the scent closely mimics that of the fruit from which it’s derived: bright, light, zesty, and clean.

Sandalwood Oil

Tree oils, such as sandalwood, are often described as grounding, comforting and soothing. As a result, the strong, earthy smell might help dispel tension and create a calmer atmosphere. It’s no surprise, then, that sandalwood has been traditionally used during rituals and meditation for generations.

Peppermint Oil

Whether it’s toothpaste, lip balm or a batch of cookies, it’s hard to escape the popularity of peppermint. It gives off such a clean and refreshing taste and scent that it makes sense we’d also use the essential oil as aromatherapy.

In addition to having a delightful scent that many people associate with winter holidays, peppermint oil has health benefits for athletic performance and can improve irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms.

The peppermint essential oil is sourced from the peppermint plant, Mentha x piperita, in the Pacific Northwest and acquired via steam distillation.

Uses and benefits of the essential oil

Essential oils have a wide range of uses. If you have chosen to shift toward natural, using essential oils is your best option. You can use them for aromatic purposes, you can use them for your skin or internally.

Depending on the use you choose for the essential oils, you can get different benefits. If you choose to use the essential oil topically, it will benefit your body and your mind, so it can relief aches and will make you have a refreshing sleep during nights. These are just a few uses and benefits of essential oils.
