• CDC is responding to an outbreak of respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus that was first detected in China and which has now been detected in more than 100 locations internationally, including in the United States. The virus has been named “SARS-CoV-2”
• Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause disease and viruses in animals and humans. The new virus has made the jump to humans from animals, but most just cause cold-like symptoms.
• Two other coronaviruses – Middle East respiratory syndrome also known as MERS & severe acute respiratory syndrome also known as Sars, are much more severe, having killed more than 1,500 people between the 2 since 2002.
• Coronaviruses are named for their appearance: Under the microscope, the viruses look like they are covered with pointed structures that surround them like a corona, or crown.
• Coronaviruses are common in different animals. Rarely, an animal coronavirus can infect humans.

Situation in U.S.

Different parts of the country are seeing different levels of COVID-19 activity. The United States nationally is currently in the initiation phases, but states where community spread is occurring are in the acceleration phase. The duration and severity of each phase can vary depending on the characteristics of the virus and the public health response.
